Walkability is key to creating safe, inviting, self sustaining neighborhood. Walkability is determined by two things: the functionality of the walkway (wide sidewalks clear of debris, trees to act as barriers between pedestrian and vehicular traffic and also to provide shade) and also, you have to have something to walk to.
Here is a map of two neighborhoods in Seattle. One in an urban environment. Plenty to walk to, see and do. One in the suburb. Much more restrictive.
